The Team

SmartFluidPower is a project that is born as spin-off of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. It is composed by a team of people with several years of experience in modelling and simulating systems and components for Fluid Power applications. The group actively collaborates with companies in this sector for the optimization and processing of components and systems. Over the years, the team has acquired excellent experience in modeling, in particular using the so-called lumped parameter approach, useful for analyzing the dynamic behavior of systems of any type. In the course of its activities, the research group found a gap in the use of modelling and simulation tools in the companies of this sector, determined simultaneously by the lack of resources and specific skills, and by the high costs required to get the license of specialized commercial products. The subjects to whom SmartFluidPower is addressed need a simpler tool that makes a lean design work, that allows the verification of the functionality and the evaluation of the performance of the designed system before going into the experimental testing phase.

Massimo Borghi
Scientific responsibility

Professor of Fluid Machines at the Department of Engineering Enzo Ferrari of Modena since 2001.

Lecturer in the course of Energy Machines and Systems in the bachelor’s degree course in mechanical engineering at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Lecturer in the Fluid Power course at the master’s degree in mechanical engineering of University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

He has been involved in training and research in collaboration with the many companies in the territory in the Fluid Power sector for 30 years.

Barbara Zardin
Technical and administrative responsibility

Graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

PhD in Engineering of Machine and Energy Systems at the University of Bologna in 2008, with a thesis entitled “Modeling and experimental characterization of hydraulic machines and components”.

Researcher at the Department of Engineering Enzo Ferrari of Modena in the field of Fluid Machines since 2010. She deals with simulation and testing of hydraulic components and systems since 2005.

Lecturer at the course ‘Simulation of hydraulic machines and systems’ in the Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

Giovanni Cillo
Manager of product research and development

Graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 2012 at the University of Basilicata.

In 2014, he obtained the II level University Master in “Fluid Power” at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

Currently a researcher at the Department Enzo Ferrari of Modena in the Fluid Power sector, where he has been working since 2015, and he deals with modelling and simulation of components and systems.
